Welcome to the Second Issue of the IEEE CSC Newsletter!

Dear Colleagues,
As we approach the end of 2014, I near the end of my 4-year tenure as President of the IEEE Council on Superconductivity (CSC). The Council has come a long way since its founding, first as an IEEE Technical Committee established by Ted Van Duzer and then as a Council established by Moises Levy. We owe its present success to the many dedicated volunteers who have built on the solid foundations laid by Ted and Moises.
Our flagship has been the Transactions on Applied Superconductivity, but we have added many other activities, from technical and service awards to student support through travel grants and graduate study fellowships, to a continuing and successful roster of distinguished lecturers and a budding activity in IEEE standards.
In line with new methods of communication and education through media, we have begun producing and making available video transcripts of key presentations at conferences. This started with the Special Session on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Josephson Effect at the 2012 Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC) and will continue – with videos to be posted in a few months – with all the plenary presentations at the 2014 ASC, as well as the presentations from the special sessions on the 50th anniversaries of SQUIDs and of NbTi.
To carry CSC forward, a continuous refreshment of vision and leadership is needed. It will be my distinct pleasure to welcome, on January 1, 2015, Antonio della Corte as our Council’s new President, signaling a new era confirming the international reach of IEEE CSC and continuing improvement in our service to the superconductivity community. Please join me in welcoming Antonio and working with him to realize our vision for an expanded and truly international CSC.

IEEE CSC AdCom Meeting - August 9th, 2014
|
The IEEE Council on Superconductivity Administrative Committee (AdCom) Meeting took place on August 9th, 2014 in Charlotte, NC, USA.
The annual CSC AdCom meeting ran from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm on August 9th. The AdCom discussed a wide range of CSC Activities including Awards, Publications, Conferences, etc.
The CSC AdCom voted and approved revised versions of the IEEE Council on Superconductivity Constitution and ByLaws. You can view them here: http://ieeecsc.org/pages/bylaws-constitution. Along with the approval of the revised governing documents, the CSC AdCom approved an updated Field of Interest. The IEEE CSC Field of Interest now reads: the field of interest of the Council and its activities and programs shall be to cover the science and technology of superconductors and their applications, including materials and their applications for electronics, magnetics, and power systems, where the superconductor properties are central to the application.
The meeting was very successful and concluded with a very nice dinner event at Fleming's Steakhouse.

IEEE Fellow Pinning Ceremony at IEEE CSC AdCom Dinner
At the IEEE Council on Superconductivity AdCom Dinner on August 9th at Fleming's Steakhouse in Charlotte, NC, John Prysbysz, Chair of the CSC Fellows Committee, pinned this year's IEEE Fellows from CSC, Elie Track and Nathan Newman. CSC was honored to recognize Elie's and Nathan's prestigious accomplishment.
IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. As it stands today, the IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the Board of Directors upon a person with an extraordinary record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting Institute membership. Each new Fellow receives a beautifully matted and framed certificate with the name of the Fellow and a brief citation describing the accomplishment, a congratulatory letter from the incoming IEEE president and a gold sterling silver Fellow lapel pin with antique finish. For more information on the IEEE Fellow Program, visit: http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/fellows/index.html.
Congratulations again to Elie Track and Nathan Newman!

IEEE Council on Superconductivity Presents Awards, Prizes, and Fellowships during the 2014 Applied Superconductivity Conference
The IEEE Council on Superconductivity presents awards, prizes, and fellowships each year to members of the applied superconductivity community in order to recognize outstanding contributions in the field of applied superconductivity by senior researchers, engineers and managers, and to encourage outstanding graduate students to continue their careers in superconductivity. The presentations are made at international conferences on applied superconductivity associated with the IEEE Council on Superconductivity. In 2014, these awards and recognitions were made during the 2014 Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC 2014) that was held in Charlotte, NC (USA) from the 10th through the 15th of August.
IEEE Awards In the Field of Applied Superconductivity
The IEEE Council on Superconductivity presents awards to senior members of the community for their continuing and significant contributions to the field of applied superconductivity over an extended period of time. The IEEE Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions to The Field of Applied Superconductivity recognizes significant contributions to the advancement and maturing of both small-scale and large-scale applications of superconductivity. In 2014, this Award for contributions to small-scale applications, was presented to Catherine P. Foley (CSIRO (Australia)), and Kent D. Irwin (Stanford University (USA)), while the Awards for large-scale applications were presented to Arnaud Devred (ITER International Organization (France)), Bruce Gamble (AMSC (USA)), E. Trifon Laskaris (GE Global Research Center (USA)), and Justin Schwartz (North Carolina State University (USA)).
This year a new award, named after Dr. James Wong, who in 2011 received the IEEE Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions in the Field of Applied Superconductivity in the area of materials research, was presented by the IEEE Council on Superconductivity. After receiving his award, Dr. Wong offered to endow an IEEE award in applied superconductor materials technology. This award, which is known as The IEEE Dr. James Wong Award for Continuing and Significant Contributions to Applied Superconductor Materials Technology, was presented for the first time to Peter J. Lee (Florida State University (USA)), and to Venkat Selvamanickam (University of Houston (USA)).
The third award presented by the Council on Superconductivity was The IEEE Max Swerdlow Award for Sustained Service to the Applied Superconductivity Community, which recognizes individuals who over a career have played a role in organizing and managing large industrial or government programs in applied superconductivity applications. This year, the Swerdlow Award was presented to Paul C. W. Chu (University of Houston (USA)), and Harold Weinstock (Air Force Office of Scientific Research (USA)). It is interesting to note that Harold Weinstock presently holds the position at the US Air Force Office of Scientific Research that was previously held by the late Max Swerdlow, for whom this award was named.
The three awards described above, each carry with them a suitably engraved plaque, a niobium medallion two inches in diameter suitably inscribed, and an honorarium of US$ 5,000.
The fourth award presented by the Council on Superconductivity in 2014 was The IEEE Carl H. Rosner Entrepreneurship Award, which recognizes young entrepreneurs active in exploiting superconductivity while they are still growing their businesses to encourage others to follow in their path. The recipient of this award in 2014 is Christopher M. Rey (Energy-2-Power[E2P] (USA)). The Rosner Award consists of an engraved plaque, a niobium medallion two inches in diameter, and an honorarium of US $ 2,500.
In Figure 1, the recipients of these several IEEE Awards presented during the 2014 Applied Superconductivity Conference are shown with officers from the IEEE Council on Superconductivity.
