Welcome to the Inaugural Issue of the IEEE CSC Newsletter!
 Colleagues,
The IEEE Council on Superconductivity was founded by dedicated volunteers in our field aiming to enhance communications, create quality publications, and leverage the breadth and resources of IEEE in serving our international community, and through IEEE, humanity. While success has been a hallmark of the Council so far, we continually strive for betterment. Our revamped website is intended to facilitate increased collaboration and communication in our community, including in particular, educational videos from lectures and plenary presentations at conferences on applied superconductivity associated with the Council. This newsletter is another channel for improved communications. Our field is broad and rich and holds the promise of new applications that will prosper in the coming decades. As I complete my tenure as President of the Council this year, I leave with a sense of pride that the next CSC President, Antonio della Corte, will carry us to a higher level of efficiency and relevance. I hope you enjoy reading the newsletter, browsing the new website, and I look forward to your feedback, which is the best way for us to continue to improve our Council’s service to the applied superconductivity community.

What is the Council on Superconductivity?

The IEEE Council on Superconductivity (CSC) promotes programs and activities that cover the science and technology of superconductors and their applications. Superconducting applications span the range from small scale analog and digital circuits and systems, to large scale applications of MRI, electrical power generation, storage, and transmission. Applications include the development and enhancement of the associated materials.
The IEEE CSC publishes the IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity (TAS) with six issues per year. Other activities of the IEEE CSC include conference and workshop sponsorships and organization (including ISEC and MT, when held in the U.S.), graduate student fellowships, preparation and distribution of digital archives, student travel support for conferences, development of standards in collaboration with other international organizations, IEEE Awards, Best Paper Awards, Entrepreneurial Awards, and the highly successful Superconductivity News Forum in collaboration with ESAS.
The purpose of the Council is to advance and coordinate work in the field of Superconductivity carried out throughout the IEEE and as such is exclusively scientific, literary and educational in character. In furtherance of the foregoing, the Council may publish appropriate periodicals, sponsor IEEE Superconductivity related conferences and conference sessions, sponsor IEEE Press publications, and engage in any other activity within its field of interest.
The field of interest of the Council and its activities and programs shall be to cover the science and technology of superconductors and their applications, including materials and their applications for electronics, magnetics, and power systems, where the superconductor properties are central to the application. Super-conducting electronic applications includes both analog and digital circuits and systems. Power applications include magnetic imaging technology, as well as the generation, storage, transmission, and use of electric power.

AdCom Member Spotlight - Bruce Strauss, Treasurer
 Q: What has been your involvement in CSC thus far?
A: At the Applied Superconductivity Conference in Palm Desert, California, Moises Levy recruited me (actually twisted my arm) to attend the ADCOM meeting. After the usual wonderful dinner at the meeting I found that I was appointed the CSC Treasurer, a post that I have held since then. Over the succeeding sixteen years it has been a pleasure to see how the CSC has grown under the leadership of Moises Levy, John Spargo and Elie Track. The Transactions on Applied Superconductivity has matured and we have organized the last MT conferences in the United States.
Q: What is the most exciting thing you have gotten to be a part of due to your involvement in CSC?
A: Perhaps one of the most memorable moments was the dedication of the IEEE plaque at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands where superconductivity was first observed.
Q: What is the thing you would like to see most happen in the future of CSC?
A: In the future I should like to see controlled growth in both the intellectual and constituent services to the community.
AdCom Member Spotlight - Cathy Foley, Women in Engineering Committee Chair
 Q: What has been your involvement in CSC thus far?
A: My name is Cathy Foley and I do research in high temperature superconducting Josephson junction devices such as SQUIDs at the CSIRO (www.csiro.au), an Australian government research laboratory where I have worked for 29 years. Over the years, the Council for Superconductivity (CSC) has been very supportive of my research and me. In 2007-8, I was awarded the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer. I used this great honour to give talks in many countries speaking to researchers and the general public. Since then I have been on the Council promoting women in Superconductivity and assisting with the chairing of meetings to develop standards in superconducting electronics. The IEEE Council on Superconductivity is truly supportive and provided me with networks and opportunities to engage with the broader international community. Australia is a long way from the rest of the world. The council has been a great way to be connected. So far the CSC has sponsored women in superconductivity networking events for the last 12 years and, at the last ASC, we held our first women in superconductivity full day workshop. There are few women in superconductivity. Lower than other research areas. We have been collecting statistics for some time. See the attached graph to show percentage of women attending ASC over the years is growing but too slowly.
Q: What is the most exciting thing you have gotten to be a part of due to your involvement in CSC?
A: With Lance Cooley, I have been working to get the international community to realize that we need to have international standards for some aspects of superconductivity if we are goin g to see the technology break through to mass use. We have joined with the other international standards community, IEC, and are starting with standard definitions and standard measurements.
Being a member of the CSC council has been a wonderful and enriching experience that has helped me to be part of the international superconductivity community and to participate to help applied superconductivity develop and reach its full impact.

The Applied Superconductivity Conference (ASC 2014) will be held August 10-15, 2014 in Charlotte, NC, USA
Energy Efficiency is a worldwide imperative driven by an increasing awareness of the need to conserve valuable natural resources. Superconductivity, the technology which revolutionized non-invasive medical imaging through MRI starting in the 1980’s, is one of the most promising enablers of energy efficiency in the 21st century. From energy efficient supercomputers to power generation, transmission, and storage, the spectrum of applications of superconductivity is broad in its reach and potential. As ASC comes to Charlotte, site of the hall of fame of NASCAR, our theme, “Race to Energy Efficiency,” is intended to inspire the world experts in superconductivity who will converge to Charlotte to present their latest results, exchange information, network, and plan and project the future breakthroughs.

The 5th International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC 14) will be held June 15-20, 2014 in Dresden, Germany
The 5th International Particle Accelerator Conference IPAC’14 will take place at the International Congress Center Dresden, Germany, from June 15 - 20, 2014. The conference has been held consecutively in Asia, Europe and North America since 2010, and combines the previous continental conferences. This is the second IPAC to be held in Europe.

The 13th International Conference on Modern Materials and Technologies (CIMTEC 2014) will be held June 15-20, 2014 in Montecatini Terme, Tuscany, Italy
As a major long standing event for the international materials community, CIMTEC will again gather together a large and qualified audience of materials scientists, physicists, chemists and engineers as well as of experts of a wide range of the most demanding application areas of modern materials, from the molecular and nanoscales to large complex integrated systems.
