IEEE CSC – Italy Chapter Workshop “Perspectives for superconducting materials and cables for future fusion applications”

CSC IC Workshop 2017Rome, Italy, October 20th, 2017

CSC14 (November 22, 2017). On October 20th, 2017, within the activities of the Italy Chapter of the CSC (aimed at the dissemination of the applied and technological aspects of Superconductivity), the Department of Engineering of the University Roma Tre (Rome, Italy) hosted the IEEE-CSC (Italy Chapter) workshop “Perspectives for superconducting materials and cables for future fusion applications”. The Workshop was organized by Giuseppe Celentano (ENEA), Nicola Pompeo (Roma Tre University and CSC), and Enrico Silva (CSC Italy Chapter Chair). As a CSC-Italy Chapter and Eurofusion ER project activity, the workshop had over 40 participants. With four outstanding invited lectures and plenty of time for discussion, the technical program presented the up-to-date status and perspectives of superconducting cables for fusion applications (L. Muzzi (ENEA, Italy), “Cables for fusion magnets: recent Nb-based CICC development and possible role of HTS materials for DEMO and DTT reactors” and M. Wolf (KIT, Germany), “Fusion cable based on CroCo approach and HTS perspectives for fusion”), the recent improvements and potential developments in HTS materials (J. MacManus-Driscoll (Cambridge, UK), “Material nano-engineering for improved pinning strength at low temperature and high fields of REBCO HTS superconductors”) and the relevant physics (A. Palau (ICMAB-CSIC, Spain), “Pinning regimes at low temperature and high fields fusion relevant conditions”). Antonio della Corte, CSC past president, was a special guest of the Workshop. The Workshop was also an opportunity to present the status of superconducting cables in the field of Fusion to Masters and PhD students, and to foster this exciting field by further increasing the interest of senior students.
